Samedi matin (19 décembre) avant la neige, un petit défile dans les rues et au Marche Fermier (celui qui est venu à Aubigny pour le Comice 2008), pour célèbrer le 'Scottish Pipe Band of the Year'

John me dit qu’aujourd'hui, 26 décembre, en Écosse et dans d'autres pays du Commonwealth, c'est le Boxing Day ou St. Stephen's Day

Ce jour férié trouverait son origine dans le fait que les serviteurs recevaient les cadeaux de leurs "maîtres" lors du premier jour ouvrable après Noël, le lendemain de la fête familiale. Cette fête ne tombe pas systématiquement le 26 décembre : dans les pays du Commonwealth, un jour férié fixe coïncidant avec un samedi ou un dimanche est systématiquement observé le jour ouvrable suivant. Si le jour de Noël tombe un vendredi, le lundi 28 décembre sera férié; si le jour de Noël est un samedi, le lundi 27 décembre et le mardi 28 décembre seront tous les deux fériés.  Au Québec, ce jour est appelé l’Après-Noël.

On mange aussi les restes du repas de la veille...dont le fameux et traditionnel pudding

Ce jour là, la tradition veut que l'on distribue des cadeaux aux plus pauvres.

Aujourd'hui, il s'agit surtout d'une fête commerciale où les magasins font des soldes.

Les soldes à Londres commencent le 26 décembre! A partir de cette date-là, les magasins de la capitale britannique offrent de grandes réductions sur leurs toutes dernières collections (25.000 billets Eurostar Paris-Londres proposés à 77 €uros)

SCOTTISH PIPE BAND OF THE YEAR 2009

“ The Haddington Pipe Band has won the Scottish Pipe Band of the Year title for 2009. It scooped the gong at a glitzy Scottish Trad Music Awards ceremony in Dumfries, which was broadcast on BBC Alba.

 

Haddington beat three other shortlisted bands to the prize – Boghall & Bathgate, Strathclyde Police, and Inveraray – after a public vote to decide the winner. All of these other bands are competing outfits whereas Haddington was the only entrant that exists to benefit the wider community. It has been an eventful year for the Haddington band which hosted the first Pipe Idol competition as well as the memorable Homecoming marches in Haddington, Tranent, North Berwick and Athelstaneford. 

The award, sponsored by the National Piping Centre, was collected by two of the band’s founding members, Bill Bradford and Pipe Major David Leckie.  

“This is unbelievable,” said Pipe Major Leckie. “Just to be nominated alongside such wonderful bands was an honour for us, and to come away with the award really is beyond anything we could have hoped for.  

“It is important to say that that our nomination, which was also totally unexpected, came because of the community and charity work we do, and because of the teaching and encouragement we give to youngsters and many others. It’s great that a band whose focus is on the community level rather than the competing scene should have been nominated and now won this title. 

“We have had wonderful support from local people, so many of whom voted for us and passed on the news to families and friends worldwide so that the good name of Haddington and East Lothian could reach many corners of the globe. We are very grateful indeed. 

 

“The awards ceremony was an emotional occasion for us. We were honoured to represent our town and county and we hope we have done them, and the many people who have led, played in, and supported the band over the years proud. We now look forward to continuing to play for the local community – with a new spring in our step – over the coming months and years.”

Congratulations... C’est aussi un grand honneur pour Aubigny qui recevra pour les Fêtes Franco Ecossaises le meilleur pipe band au monde !

J’imagine la joie de tout le staff, pipers et drummer recevant cette distinction , just in time, pour le final d’ homecomming . Le défilé , aujourd'hui, dans les rues d’Haddindton, en présence du 1^er ministre écossais Alex Salmond et du Provost Sheena Richardson, pour le « Saltire Event » va être quelque chose... J'imagine l'ambiance nocturne dans les pubs...pour attendre la Saint Andrew... 

(*) Haddington Pipe Band, a bénéficié de nombreux votes venus d’over sea et en particulier d’Aubigny.

EAST LOTHAIN le berceau du drapeau écossais....

Samedi, 29 novembre, 11h30,  les paras du Royal Regiment of Scotland « Golden lions » vont tomber du ciel avec le fameux Saltire à Athelstaneford. Des cavaliers vont escorter les drapeaux écossais jusqu'à Haddington, en empruntant le vieux pont de Nungate...à suivre

(*) The Saltire (« Le sautoir » en français) est le nom donné au drapeau national de l’Ecosse. Il représente une croix blanche sur fond bleu, la croix du martyr chrétien Saint-André, d’où l’appellation plus commune que porte le drapeau écossais : la Croix de Saint André. Ce drapeau est considéré comme un des plus vieux drapeaux du monde et le plus vieux drapeau national aujourd’hui en usage. La tradition populaire attribue son origine au règne de Angus II, roi des Pictes et des Scots. En 832, Angus II était à la tête d’une armée de Pictes et de Scots contre les Angles. Lors de la bataille d'Athelstaneford ,en Lothie, son armée fut encerclée par les Angles et ses soldats prièrent pour être délivrés. La nuit, Saint-André apparut au roi Angus II et lui promit la victoire ... Le matin, un sautoir blanc apparut dans le ciel bleu, galvanisant l’armée d'Angus II, terrorisant les Angles : les armées d'Angus II remportèrent la victoire et la Croix de Saint-André devint dès lors le drapeau national de l’Ecosse. La Croix de Saint-André a été intégrée au drapeau du Royaume-Uni après l’Acte d’Union avec l’Angleterre en 1707. L’Ecosse conserve son indépendance judiciaire et religieuse, mais la monnaie, les impôts, la diplomatie, le commerce, le parlement et le drapeau deviennent communs avec l’Angleterre. La croix rouge de Saint George et la croix bleue de Saint Andrew se combinent pour former le "Old" Union Flag. Le drapeau du Royaume-Uni que nous connaissons aujourd’hui verra le jour en 1801, quand l’Irlande rejoindra l’Union.

EAST LOTHIAN, dimanche 29 Novembre, liesse, dans et autour de Haddington dans le cadre des célébrations finales d’Homecoming Scotland, en présence du Premier Ministre écossais.

Je vous avais parlé que l’Ecosse devait célébrer cette année  commémorera le 250ème anniversaire de naissance du poète national Robert Burns "Homecocoming". J’ai reçu, hier soir,  un petit message de notre ami John McMillan (Chairman Haddington Pipe Band Committee). Il m’annonce de somptueux spectacles organisés le W-E prochain en East Lothian (Athelstaneford et Haddington), à la veille du Saint Andrew's Day pour commémorer le Saltire (drapeau écossais) et la fin d’ Homecoming Scotland. HADDINGTON ASKS FOR PUBLIC SUPPORT IN BID TO BE PIPE BAND OF THE YEAR

Haddington Pipe Band is going out to the local community in its bid to be voted Scottish Pipe Band of the Year later this month.

The band is one of four shortlisted for the title, and the winner will be decided by an online public vote. So band members and friends are now campaigning for support, and will be taking to the streets of Haddington this Saturday morning (7 November) from 1000 hours, with some of the younger players (who also make up the And Then There Were 4 group) entertaining shoppers and handing out information leaflets about the competition outside Erica’s, Tesco, Tyneside Tartans and the Corn Exchange.

“We are still amazed to be shortlisted for this award,” said Pipe Major David Leckie.

“We’re not a competing band and our nomination is because of our community work and our promotion of piping and drumming to youngsters and others.

“Having received an award at the Scottish Events Awards, for organising the Tartan Week parades as part of Homecoming in East Lothian and sponsoring the Pipe Tune for East Lothian Competition, we are delighted with this recognition of our community band alongside some of the best known competition bands in Scotland.

“We’ve already had a great reception to the news and we are now hoping that people will vote for us in the competition. It would be a huge honour for us and, we think, great news for the town and the county.”
